Beltane is a traditional Celtic festival celebrated on May 1st, marking the beginning of summer. It is one of the four major Gaelic seasonal festivals, the others being Samhain, Imbolc and Lughnasadh.
Historically observed in Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. Beltane is associated with various rituals intended to promote fertility, protect from harm and encourage growth.
Today, Beltane is celebrated by many especially among pagan and Wiccan communities. It’s commonly known as a festival of fertility, fire and abundance. It represents a time to celebrate the return of summer and the fertility of the upcoming year.
The name "Beltane" is thought to originate from the Old Irish words Bel, meaning "bright" or "brilliant," which refers to the Celtic sun god Belenus. And tene, meaning "fire."
Beltane can be translated to mean "bright fire" or "fire of Bel."
